The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources brings forth numerous opportunities. But what exactly are the latest industry trends and job prospects? Let’s explore them below.

A significant trend in the renewable energy sector is the increase in clean energy investments. Governments, companies, and investors are allocating resources and funds into renewable energy projects such as solar or wind farms as well as hydroelectric, geothermal, or nuclear plants. Skilled workers from sectors such construction, engineering, or manufacturing are essential for the development and operation of these projects and plants.

As technology advances so does its integration into the renewable energy sector. One example of this is the use of generative AI in solar or wind farms. This technology aids in identifying ideal locations for energy installations by analyzing factors such as wind patterns, solar exposure, and environmental impact. Furthermore, it optimizes the process of designing efficient solar panel layouts and aerodynamic wind turbine blades. This trend creates opportunities for skilled workers in the field of software development, data science, artificial intelligence, and related disciplines.

Most common jobs in the renewable energy sector

As the renewable energy sector continues to expand, here are some of the most common jobs within the industry.

According to IRENA, Solar photovoltaic is the largest sector in the renewable energy industry and accounts for more than one-third of the renewable energy workforce. It also employs the largest percentage of women accounting for about 40% of the workforce.

Common jobs in this field include:

  • Solar Technicians
  • PV Installers
  • Solar Engineers
  • Consultants
  • Energy Analysts

Global employment in onshore and offshore wind projects amounted to about 1.4 million jobs in 2022 according to IRENA. This sector includes jobs such as:

  • Wind Turbine Engineers
  • Service Technicians for Offshore Wind Projects
  • Asset or Sales Manager

In the hydropower sector, direct jobs are made up of about

  • Two-thirds operation and maintenance jobs
  • One-third construction and installation jobs
  • Remaining amount (around 6%) is made up of component manufacturing

As the use of renewable energy sources continues to increase, there is a growing demand for skilled and proficient workers. This translates to an abundance of opportunities for those with backgrounds in science, engineering, mathematics, or technical fields.

Take courses and research the industry
